When to get diapers cheap …

Few of my neighbors, with infants, have asked me how to stock-up on diapers … when to shop for diapers … how can they save money on diapers, and how to stock-up on baby products (such as shampoos and wipes).

Well … unfortunately, when babies need diapers … they need diapers.  It’s something you will have pay; especially when stores stop stacking coupons.  In the past you can stack digital coupons with manufacturers coupons, but many manufacturers have cracked down on stores to STOP stacking coupons for customers.

I totally understand why manufacturers would do that because they are losing tons of money.

Anyhow, here are few suggestions I have made to my neighbors regarding diaper questions.

First and foremost, know how much diapers cost.  If you are brand loyal then you have a great idea what prices are considered as a good price.

For instance, I used to buy Huggies diapers for the boys and LUV diapers for the girls.  I used to pay over $12.00 for a large bag of diapers (this was when I didn’t coupon … silly me!!!) so I thought anything under that was a great price.

Many of times there will be $2-$3 manufacturers coupons in the Sunday coupon inserts or have blinkie’s in the store with $3.00 coupons.

Many stores will have Huggies on sale for between $7-$9 a bag, and with $3.00 off coupon you can pick them up as low as $4 to $7 (depending on size and variety).

If you can live with spending $7.00 for a bag of diapers then by all means pick them up.  As for me … I am a cheap-o!  I want to spend much less.

Kroger stores and its daughter companies (i.e. Dillons, Gerbes, Food4Less, Bakers, and etc) will have special promotions on Huggies products.  For example, a month ago Dillons and Gerbes had Huggies promotion when you spend $25 the you get a printout CAT of $5.00 off towards your next shopping trip.  This coupon is towards your grocery bill and you don’t have to buy specific items to $5.00 off.

With my awesome coupons, in my coupon wallet, I decided to purchase 5 bags at $8.98 each and 1 bag of Huggies wipes; which totaled to $51.98.  Thanks to my coupons I was able to slash $16.00 off my total due (now $35.98).

Since I spent $50.00 plus I was able to get 2 (TWO) $5.00 CAT coupons from Huggies.  So, if you subtract the extra $10.00 I ONLY spent $25.98 for 5 (FIVE) bags of diapers, and 1 (ONE) wet wipes (or $5.20/a bag of diapers and $0.99 for a package of wet-wipes)!

With smart couponing you honestly can’t get cheaper than $5.00 a bag of diapers.

Other times stores will ONLY have a MEGA sale on diapers with no additional promotions (i.e. printout Q’s).  For instance, you can pick up a diaper for $7.98 (if you buy 3), and with your $2.00 OFF coupons it will make them $5.98 a bag.

One way or the other … around $5.00 is my goal.  If I can get it cheaper then I will get more, but $5.00 a bag is an excellent deal.

Make sure to do your math … some times these MEGA sales and promotions are NOT good deals.  So, it’s your responsibility to stay on top of your couponing game.

Our son who is six years old does not like to do baby stuff .  Now what that includes is a great variety of things.  Sometimes we have to talk about it to see what this is all about.  Certain cartoons apply but not all.  There are big boy cartoons and baby cartoons.  Batman is not for babies but Teen Titans is.  Superman is a big boy cartoon but anything on PBS seems to be for babies.  I caught him once watching one of the baby cartoons but he justified it by him being just a little boy still.  Baby stuff?  Not this time.

It is not just about Tv though, but it involves everything.  He does not want to be baby in any way.  He likes wrestling, Jackie Chan movies and the X-men.  We do not talk baby talk to him so he doesn’t get that kind of attention from me and my wife.  His friends are sometimes older and he does not want to appear to be the baby in the group.  Some of his friends are younger too and of course, they act like babies.  Young girls around five years old are defiantly doing many baby stuff things.

Sometimes he still wets the bed and putting on diapers was a little of a fight.  Many children his age may wet the bed.  Our doctor says that sometimes-hard sleepers will do this.  We had to name the diapers night pants and convince him it is all right to wear them.  He agrees but often comes to us asking us to throw them away because he did not wet his bed last night.  One night does not cut it we say, and sure enough, he wets his bed.  He has grown to accept his fate and accept the baby stuff for at least the time being.  He is a very happy kid though, and this small problem will go away.  I guess I am a little guilty though, of teasing him sometimes about it.  I will be at a store like Wall Mart and point to the diaper aisle, take a package of diapers, dance, and sing with them.  I know it could be perceived as mean but he loves it and will mimic me.  He teases me too.  I can be a little bit of a baby too you know.  He has caught me doing baby stuff too.

He loves babies.  I mean real babies.  When we go out about the town he always points to babies, watches them, looks closely at them.  We have a new baby in our family and he loved holding her.  He likes taking care of babies too.  Younger children like two year olds and three year olds are like babies too.  Our next-door neighbors have a little baby and a two year ld and he must protect them.  He crosses the street with them, keeps them safe from cars going too fast. and rocks. and accidents.  Rocks can hurt, not baby stuff.  It is great watching him grow up because he is not your ordinary child.  We adopted him from Vietnam and he has come a long way from a poor country and a poor orphanage.  We are to say the least, very proud of him.  It is an amazing story.

Finding a great obstetrician can also help you to feel at ease as new parents. Finding a doctor who can explain things so that you know exactly what he is talking about, and is willing to answer any questions that you have can give you some of the reassurance that you need as new parents.

Once the nursery is set up and you are feeling more confident about becoming new parents you should begin to plan for the delivery day. May parents pack a bag to have on hand of all of the things that the mom and baby will need for their hospital stay. Many parents have a coming home outfit for the baby to wear home and having clothes for mom as well will ensure that mom and baby feel their best for the homecoming day. Also having the car seat already installed in the car will save you a step when you are rushing to the hospital. On the actual day of delivery you will need to get in contact with friends and family to let them know about the new arrival. The easiest way to insure that everyone is reached is to have a phone list already prepared with names and numbers on it. Simply designate a trusted person to be in charge of the phone list so that as the father you can focus on the mother and baby.

While a baby brings about a lot of changes in your life it is all worth it in the end. The first time that baby looks into your eyes you will forget about all of the worries and stress.

Traveling with an infant doesn’t have to be a difficult task if you are prepared for the specific challenges that will most likely face you out of the home. Finally, be sure to bring any extra baby stuff that might pertain to their age and development. If the baby is teething, be sure to have objects that he or she can chew on to help ease discomfort. Bringing along a few extra snacks if your baby is eating solid food can also make a world of difference. The most important thing to remember is to be prepared for any need that the child could have, and you will be able to stave off any crying attacks and keep your tiniest traveler happy as can be.

Welcoming a new member into your household involves more than just purchasing a crib and calling it a day.
