Having a reliable computer is a key to success in college. Many colleges offer a desktop in the dorm rooms and also a computer lab that is available for students to use. As well as around school time many computer stores have sales for students on desktop computers as well as laptop and notebook computers.
In college there will be times that you have to use the internet to do research. Counting on the computer labs may not be the best idea as there may be a time that they are closed during the night. If you have a desktop in your dorm room it is not necessarily going to be available to use whenever you want it. Sharing with your room mate can be important to keeping a friendly environment in your dorm room. Many campuses these days are offering wifi connectivity for students so that they can use their own laptops and notebook computers whenever they need. This can be a huge bonus when you have procrastinated writing a paper until the last moment and have to stay up all night researching and writing your paper.
Many higher level classes can become writing intensive. Meaning that most of the homework and tests will require you to turn in papers and write essays. Having your own computer will help you with these writing intensive types of classes. You will be able to do research and write whenever you have time and is convenient for you. You will not have to work around the computer lab hours or around your room mate. Having your own personal laptop computer will also help you find the best place to study and think while you are writing your papers. Some students find any little thing a distraction and need a quiet place to think. Some roommates may not be concerned that you have a paper to write while they have a party on their side of the room. Being able to take your computer and find a good spot for you to write may be the difference in writing a great paper and a paper that barely passes.
Also having a place that is all of your own to store your files and papers can help you in the different classes that you take. That intro to business paper that you wrote your freshman year may help you in a business class later on. The research can help you as well as some of the ideas and thoughts that you had. Many students that use a shared computer save their work to a flash drive. These small devices can become easily lost leaving you without the work that you have done so far. They can also easily be stolen or switched with another persons. With most flash drives being the same size and color you can accidentally grab your roommate’s flash drive on your way to print out your paper.
So if you are thinking of going back to college or you are getting ready to enter into your first year of college think about all of the benefits that your own computer can bring to you. Wouldn’t you rather have the freedom to choose when you get to access a computer as well as having the freedom to move around to find a nice place to study and research?

New computers models are put out on a monthly basis it seems, so many consumers may be wondering how important it is to stay up to date with all of this computer stuff. There are a number of benefits to purchasing a brand new computer, including the fact that it will have all of the most updated software and hardware included on it. New computers operate at a faster speed, and are more likely to have a higher degree of storage space and other capabilities and features. However, the downside to this is that they can be quite pricy.
Purchasing used electronics in general can be a bit of a gamble, because over time there is a much higher likelihood that they will need repairs. Computer stuff is no different. While you can certainly find some great bargains in the case of used computers, this should be looked into with some degree of caution, because computers that are too old may break down immediately. Sometimes, if that particular type of older computer is not manufactured any more, it can be quite difficult to find the right parts or other system components to fix them, because they may not be on the market anymore.
However, purchasing used computer stuff that is relatively new still can yield some great discounts with little risk. While you won’t have the pleasure of configuring the system of a new computer, because someone else will have already done it, you will have a machine that is still in working order for a far lower price. If all you use a computer for is typing documents and using the internet, there is no real reason to splash out on a fancy new machine. Chances are that you won’t even end up using half of its features.
Family computers may be another story. If you want to buy a reliable computer that can be used by every member of the family, it might be worth your while to purchase your computer stuff new. That way, you will be guaranteed to have a warranty of some sort, and so if anything breaks down, as it often does when children are using it unsupervised, repairs will be no problem. The computer itself is only one part of the equation, as there is a wide variety of other accessories and software programs that can then be added to it. Care should be taken with the computer though, as this is the main part of the purchase.

When tax season rolls around each year, many people face it with dread, thinking that they will have a load of paperwork to take care of, for very little money back, if anything. One way to think positively about this task is to start thinking about all of the business expenses that you have incurred this year, and whether or not you could potentially write them off as deductions, for a refund from the government. If you have purchased any computer stuff, for instance, that is used for your business you could be due for some money back.
This will depend on whether or not you have been using this computer stuff solely for work purposes, or if you also use it for personal emailing and other things along those lines. The IRS makes a clear distinction that if you use it for personal use, you are not going to get as much money back, and you need to make that clear distinction on your tax forms. You can try to get away with saying it is for strictly business, but they have a way of investigating these things and if your name gets pulled up for an audit, this could lead to problems down the road.
For example, if you live in a household with a child and there are no other computers in the home but the one that you say is allegedly just for business, chances are that the IRS is going to assume that the child uses it too for other computer stuff. This means that you cannot list the computer as a work expense. There is a way to make a deduction if you can prove that the computer was used for half work and half personal time, but if it is only for personal use than you will get no money back.
If this whole process seems confusing, you may want to enlist the help of an accountant or an online accounting service when filing your taxes this year. They can help you go over the computer stuff that you have purchased and tell you whether or not it’s going to be an applicable business expense that you will be able to write off. There are other business expenses that many people don’t’ think about as well, including other office supplies that you have purchased or transportation costs. Be sure to get back what you are owed, to help make this time of year a more pleasant one.

Even if you don’t do a lot of writing or word processing, it seems all too easy to start accumulating extra files and miscellaneous computer stuff. This scan clog up your desktop and make it difficult to find anything, if you don’t start putting in a desktop filling system as soon as you get your computer. Most computers try to make it easy for you, with separate designated folders for music, pictures, downloads and documents. All you have to do is start using these features as the makers intended you to, and then you will not have such a problem down the road.
If the mess has already been built up however, it’s not too late. You can take an afternoon to fix this and organize all of the computer stuff into the system of your choice. There is no obligation to use the folders that the computer has set up in advance if you don’t want to. The first step is to take a look at all of these files and determine if any are disposable. If you can delete some, this is helpful because not only does it reduce the amount of overall documents to file, but it also frees up more storage space on the hard drive.
You can then start the process of organizing these documents, pictures, or any other computer stuff that you may have into categories. Set up file folders on the computer that can be used to then store each of these different categories of file, and drag the files into the folders. Already, your desktop will have a much neater appearance, and it will be far easier to find what you are looking for. Make sure that you rename the files something that is fairly uniform and that you will be able to recognize immediately.
Renaming the files is a very important part of computer stuff because it helps the finder tool that your computer has built into it, and means that you will be able to search more effectively for a specific file. This is really not that difficult of a task, and even for the most disorganized person it shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours. Once everything has been sorted and renamed, you may want to back up these files onto a memory card or CD just to ensure you have them stored somewhere safe should the system crash down the road. This will save you great pain later.

A home or personal computer of some sort is an essential tool these days for students of almost any age. This computer stuff is important not only for word processing reports and papers, but also for its research capabilities. Many university classes are now even conducted partially online, which makes it mandatory to have computer access. For all of these reasons, it’s vital to make sure that before you enroll in college that you will be able to find a working computer with internet access, and many universities will tell you this right off the bat.
Of course, for those students who don’t have their own computer stuff, most academic institutions will provide computer labs of some sort. They don’t wish to hold any students back. Still, it is simply more pleasant to be able to do your work from the comfort of your own home. There are a few resources that you could install onto your computer to make it more convenient for these purposes, including office publishing programs, and a good internet browser. You may want PowerPoint or some sort of other program that works like this, for class presentations that look more professional.
Your university’s website can be a good place to start when you need to use computer stuff for research purposes. Usually it will be connected to the school’s library, so that you will have access to those databases. There may also be other external links that can point you in the right direction down the road for other collections of information. The internet is full of academic journals that are perfect for just these purposes. Some require a password, which your university should be able to give you, if they are active subscribers.
Because there is so much miscellaneous computer stuff out there on the internet, finding accurate sources can seem difficult at times. This does not need to be an impossible task, however, if you stick to the official resources that have been listed above. Your school also most likely has a media center that will help you with this, or even offer full courses on the various aspects of internet research, to get you off on the right foot. It’s in the school’s best interest to make sure that you are being provided the most accurate information at all times, to help facilitate the learning process. This has changed the face of academic research today.

While it is nice to think of computers as their own little indestructible fortress, this is sadly not the case. Sometimes they fall prey to viruses or other malicious computer stuff that can jeopardize the internal contents of the computer. Even if the system is restored, you could end up losing valuable files that were stored on the hard drive, which makes it essential to back up your work to a secondary source whenever possible. That way, if the system does crash, you will still have access to all of the information that was stored there.
Anyone who makes their living from their files, including writers or graphic designers, will want to take special care to safeguard their computer stuff. It can be devastating to lose a large project that you may have been working on, simply because the computer decides to start working. Even if you take very good care of your personal computer, accidents do still happen, or the computer ages and loses what you have stored within it. Make sure that this doesn’t happen with a backup method. If you want to be extra safe, you could even think of using several backup methods.
One of the traditional methods of backing up computer stuff is to use a memory card or CD, and to transfer your files onto that. This can then be inserted back into any other computer, to transfer the files back. That should be a rather safe method. CD’s are considered to be the most reliable methods of transferring files, with the least incidence of losing anything in translation. They are also compatible with all different types of computers, so if you need to transfer files from a PC to a Mac, or vice versa, this should be no problem.
Another new way of backing up computer stuff is to store your files online. If you have your own website, you could archive written files, sounds, or images and store them on a host’s data service. This is a safe way to make sure that they are out there semi-permanently, although then they may be visible by others. You will have to take all of this into consideration. The safest method may actually be to combine both, just in case you end up losing a backup CD. You would then have the files stored online, making it possible to restore them and have permanent access.

Early computers that were sold for home use, P.C.’s, or personal computers as they came to be known, were glorified word processers. They served the purpose well, when the purpose was typing text, saving it, and transmitting it to the printer. Video was non-existent, beyond showing greenish-white text on a black background. Audio consisted of a beep or chime. It was very exciting! Most of you should be thankful you don’t remember the early days of personal computing. It now feels like that was the stone age, so much has happened to advance the technology of computer stuff.
The current generation of personal computers and mac’s boast features we could hardly imagine just a couple of decades ago. Sound functions have improved remarkably, and now listening to your favorite musical genres and artists on your computer offers better audio quality than the best home sound systems of a generation ago could deliver. Put on a set of ear buds, or plug in some high-end computer speakers, and your computer becomes the waiter at a virtual feast of exquisite audio! And when we turn our attention to video, the advances are almost more remarkable. Rapid advancement in graphics and computer speed now allows for computer visuals that are simply stunning. Gaming is incredible! So is watching our favorite streaming video for video sharing sites or the DVD in the disc drive. Computer stuff is so far ahead of what it was just a few years ago, it’s like night and day. Kids take this technological wizardry for granted, but those of us who remember the first personal computers continue to be amazed at the feats of each new generation.
Perusing a website today that specializes in computer stuff is like being a kid in a candy store all over again. Inexpensive lap tops and desk tops are available that amaze us with their capabilities. Accessories abound that turn our computers into monitors for all kinds of video transmission, picture and video producing and editing studios, and world-class internet surfers. Yes, the rise of the internet has driven much of the innovation, but so have savvy computer designers who view the computer as a singular piece of equipment to be used for communication, work, data storage, and entertainment.Â
