Mr. MOM (1983)

I have watched Mr. MOM movie starting Michael Keaton few years ago (long before I started couponing), and never really thought about the scene when he and fellow stay home moms were playing pokers with coupons.

I thought it was funny, but nothing more.  Back then … the scene didn’t have any meaning message to me because, first, I wasn’t a housewife and second I wasn’t couponing.

I was still “young” and everything I needed came from my parents or charging to my credit cards.  Those were the days where I was “free-spirited” with no real life experiences or worries in my mind.

It was time of fun, parties, friends, and occasionally attending classes to make sure to let the professors know that I am still enrolled in classes.

Thinking now … I can’t believe I was that careless!  Wow …

Anyhoot, it was late and there wasn’t any good entertainment movies and shows on TV so I started browsing the movie channels, Netflix, and Vudu movie collections.

Somehow I came across the movie Mr. Mom, which was made in 1983.  I usually wouldn’t watch movies that old, but something about that night (maybe my husband snoring in the background or my kids getting up to go to the bathroom) that made me watch the movie.

Well … I finally came across the scene where Michael Keaton character was playing poker games with coupons.

I almost wet my pants when I saw that!  I just couldn’t stop laughing, and wound up waking my husband from his deep sleep.

I couldn’t believe how I could relate to this movie, and thought to myself I should start a coupon-poker night!  It would be fun as heck seeing couponers exchanging and gambling with coupons; who knew you needed to carry your coupon wallet at all times!  LOL

By no means I am endorsing gambling because I don’t gamble.  Well … I take it back.  I do occassionally spent $10 when the big lotto is at $200 millions  plus jackpot, but I don’t buy scratch lotto or anything like that.

Like I tell my kids … I don’t believe in gambling, but spending $10 (every 6 plus months) on a big jackpot lotto is ok because if I am meant to win the then I will win it with $10.

I think couponers will really fully enjoy this movie clip!

There are so many funny stuff  happening in the movie, but my favorite one was the coupon scene.  Isn’t it funny … the “easiest” job people assume are the hardest one; like being a stay-home mom?

You see a whole lot of funny stuff when you are a schoolteacher.  Of course, it would be unprofessional to laugh at some of this, but sometimes you just cannot help yourself.  I work with Special Education students and they all have their moments.  Some only will wear their clothes backwards, some cannot stand wearing shoes and one student I had only wore tank tops.  He had sensory issues.  One young girl always wet her clothes if she laughed too much so I had to curtail my jokes especially for her.  Do not want to embarrass anybody you know.  Here is some funny stuff.  One student loved Godzilla so much to get him to do anything I had to incorporate Godzilla in my lesson plans.   

Godzilla became my “Dick” in Dick and Jane stories and Godzilla starred in all my short stories.  I was afraid I would run out of idea to use Godzilla.  Godzilla seemed to know everybody.  He was with Tom Sawyer in the cave, with Huck Finn on the boat and was a pirate and a soldier in the Revolutionary war too.  I had to go home and think hard on all the things Godzilla could do.  It was all some funny stuff.

Another student was very shy.  He sat in the corner with his shirt over his head.  It took three of us sometimes to move him in a chair.  Now to keep him in that chair was an event too.  He liked to hold things too all the time.  Many of these students like to hold things.  I call them busy hands.  Of course at lunch is when it really gets exciting.  They spit food, throw food, puke, choke, cough and generally make big messes.  If you turn, your head to look at someone else you might be wearing a whole plate of food.  It is some funny stuff.  I have learned to bring extra clothes just in case.  Wearing a chocolate shirt all day is a little much you see.  Some of the students like to hit and scratch and pinch which also can lead into some crazy things.  It is not very funny when someone gets hit but it was funny one time when an innocent game of baseball led to me getting clubbed by a plastic bat.  It was my fault and all the kids laughed at that one.  It was some funny stuff.  Of course, encouraging bad behavior is never a good thing, but once in awhile, well, you just have to laugh. 

Bowling off a ramp is another fun activity the kids enjoy and most can do it.  They push a plastic bowling ball off a metal ramp towards plastic pins that we have to set up.  No automatic pin setters here.  It got to the point where I was tired of setting ten pins up every few minutes so I cheated.  Yes, I cheated and only set up eight  or nine.  One student caught me by running over to me and pointing out my mistake.  It was funny stuff.  Well, she was right and I was back to ten pins but only for a while.  That is tough on the back you know.  Overall, I would not change anything about this job because I get to laugh everyday with them and sometimes I am the butt of the joke.  It really does feel great though when the students laugh at my jokes.  It means, I hope, they are understanding.  You see, laughing at a joke takes a little knowledge and intelligence.  I hope they continue to laugh and progress into fine young men and women remain   It was all funny stuff.

There have been several heydays of stand-up comedy, but there is a rising interest in the past several years of people wanting to be entertained by a live comedian saying really funny stuff right before their eyes. From Richard Prior, to Eddie Murphy, to Adam Sandler, and now Zach Galifianakis, the humor has changed over the years. It can be said that comedians have to work a bit harder today to get the same amount of laughs because audiences by now have heard so many different comedians that if someone doesn’t stand out, the audience will not pay attention to them.

With so much in contemporary society to poke fun at, comedians today are having a field day with politics, hypocrisy, religion, you name it. For a good comedian who understands what funny stuff is all about, nothing is off limits. Part of the point of stand-up comedy is to question people’s ideas about certain subjects that many people have an opinion about. By poking fun at core issues of the day, people are forced to re-frame their thoughts around the topic now that a humorous perspective has been placed over it.

Because there is a lot of hypocrisy out there, in pretty much every place in contemporary society, comedians are helpful in bursting the bubble on hypocrisy and showing people that not only are these matters of hypocrisy some real funny stuff at times, but it also brings up really good questions about the nature of humanity and what humans will accept. Comedians are like jesters that steer people in the direction of humor and of truth. By bursting the illusion of the world with sharp wit, comedians reveal a slice of how things really are instead of how things are perceived. It’s actually a very helpful role in today’s society.

People these days are going to see stand-up comedians more frequently these days. There are comedy clubs in every major city that are open every night to highlight new talent that will knock people in the audience down with their extreme funny stuff. There is a new style that is surfacing as well. Instead of one-liner jokes with a punch line at the end, comedians are heading in one of two directions. Comedians either tell long narratives with funny anecdotes or they take the audience on a whirlwind of absurd humor. Either way, it’s good to see stand-up comedy on the rise.

There’s a reason that the comedy section in a movie rental store, such as Hollywood Video or Blockbuster Video, is one of the largest sections in the place. That’s because people undeniably like to laugh and like to be entertained with incredibly funny stuff. People like to come home from a long day of work and throw in a light-hearted DVD that will let them shed the stresses of the day and zone out into a world of jokes where everything works out in the end. There are some movies that aren’t considered comedies that still make people laugh, but generally speaking, comedy is its own specific genre.

Will Ferrell is one of the premier comedy actors who have made some several movies with some ridiculously funny stuff in them. One of his best is called “Stepbrothers”. In it he is a forty year old man who acts like a little teenager. He’s never left the house and lives with his mother. When his mother marries another man, Ferrell’s character and his mother move in with this man and his grown adult son who also exhibits youthful immaturity. The hilarity begins quickly and at every turn.

Adam Sandler is another comedian who has been in several movies containing funny stuff. In fact, Sandler has created an empire based on his humor. He owns his own production company called, Happy Madison. That name comes from two movies he made early on in his career: “Billy Madison” and “Happy Gilmore”. These two movies are now considered classics in comedy. Sandler has also been in a movie called “Funny People”, but ironically, the movie was not exceedingly funny.

One of the top comedy actors right now is a bearded man named Zach Galifianakis. He was recently in a comedy movie called “The Hangover”. In it, Galifianakis played the dim-witted brother of a woman about to get married. Galifianakis’s character goes along on a Las Vegas bachelor party with the groom and his friends Needless to say, some very crazy things happen. The guys wake up in the morning and must retrace their steps to find the groom, who has gone missing. The movie got good reviews and now that it is out on DVD, the movie-renting public is eating it up. Perhaps it’s not quite Oscar material, but it sure is good as a source of funny stuff.

There’s a reason why everyone is not described as funny to people who have not met them. There’s nothing worse than someone trying to tell a joke and it just bombs. Sometimes when this happens, the unfunny person will conclude by trailing off or mention how, I guess you had to be there. This is unacceptable. There is an art to telling a joke packed with the funny stuff that people want to hear. That means that this art can be learned, so there is no excuse to tell a joke that is not funny.

Start with the set-up. This can take form in many different ways. But it should lead the person hearing the joke to understand that a funny punch line is coming. Many people like a joke that is set up in a three part set up. That is a pretty classic structure. At the beginning of the joke, it’s important to speak with confidence. Even if you can’t quite remember all the details, that’s OK. You can just make up the details as you go. There are usually only certain plot points that you must hit for the joke to make sense. Otherwise it’s a good thing to improvise a bit. That way the joke is personalized and you have put your fingerprint on it. It will likely be funnier this way.

Next, you will want to accentuate certain parts of the joke as it is being told, especially parts that are innately funny or that must be fully understood to get the punch line of the joke. Without the proper set up, the joke will probably not be very funny stuff. Once you have your audience riveted to their chair listening intently to your joke, you can then drop the punch line and let the laughter ensue.

It’s interesting how a joke can be like a weapon of extreme funny stuff in the hands of one person and a flaccid regret in the hands of other people. Some people are naturally funny and naturally understand how to tell a joke, while others mess up the punch line every time. The saving grace is that joke-telling can be learned with a little practice. If you believe you might need some help telling a funny joke, then recruit your mother or a friend or a stranger at a party and practice telling jokes. Sure, people might avoid you until you have mastered the skill, but that’s no reason to give up on funny stuff.

For some reason, society has decided that people who dress up in over-sized shoes, water-squirting flowers, white make up, a round red nose and colorful outfits are sources of funny stuff. Perhaps it comes as no surprise that there are a great many people who are deathly afraid of the odd balls: clowns. It’s an interesting thing to consider what would possess someone to dawn all the clown accoutrements and go out to try to make people laugh. Sure, clowns have been around a long time and there are several paintings that highlight clowns over the ages. But are clowns really funny?

One thing that is a big peculiar is that in the South American country of Peru, clowns perform at wedding receptions. There are many gags they have, each one containing less funny stuff than the last. As the clown begins pulling what seems like a never ending handkerchief out from his pocket, the audience members knows what to expect. It is a stale gag that no longer has any humor. So maybe clowns are meant only for kids, for they haven’t seen these bad jokes a hundred times. But then why do kids tend to cry when clowns are around? It’s because they are not only not funny, but they are somewhat scary to many people.

Another cheap bit that clowns have become known for is piling about ten clowns into a single car. Perhaps that is a weird thing, or an impressive act knowing the amount of contortion that had to happen for them all to fit in the car, but it is not funny stuff. Humor is, after all, a purely subjective thing. But that doesn’t mean it’s appropriate to give clowns the benefit of the doubt. There are even movies that peg clowns as the murderous villains or as space aliens with a taste for human blood. Does that sound funny? No. No it does not.

Perhaps being a clown is a noble profession to some. Everyone’s must eat, and more so, everyone’s got to be entertained. Being entertained by a clown is hardly entertainment at all, however. And it certainly isn’t funny stuff. The popular animated show, “The Simpsons”, has a character named Krusty the Clown. Now he actually is funny, but that’s primarily because he is parodying the other clowns in the world. He’s a hard-drinking, gambling, attention-craving clown without a real moral compass. That’s the best way for clowns to be remembered.

Made famous by the popular 1990s TV show hosted by Bob Saget, “America’s Funniest Home Videos”, one video stands out as really funny stuff. A viewer of the hilarious show could bet that each episode would contain at least one video that ended with the father of a young, aspiring athlete rolling on the ground, hands cupped between his legs. That’s right, the old ball-in-the-crotch video. This video, and hundreds of others like it, managed to put “America’s Funniest Home Videos” on the map.

The famous video containing the funny stuff in question has been parodied countless times and has come to represent the show, America’s Funniest Home Videos. Perhaps it’s some of the basest of base-level humor, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not funny. For some reason, when the video comes on the television, the viewer already anticipates what is going to happen and the humor wheels begin to spin. There’s the little boy, usually quite excited to be playing sports with his dad. Perhaps it is the boy’s birthday and he just got a football, or just received a bat and baseball for his birthday. The loving father takes the boy out to the back yard to test out the new sports equipment. Then there is the wind up, which you know is coming. The anticipation is thick in the air. Then, finally, there is a wham. The dad goes down and the audience begins to laugh.

Bob Saget would be narrating the video. He typically liked to use a high-pitched voice, which was a bit of funny stuff in its own rite. There are several variations on this theme. For instance, there is one video that has been on America’s Funniest Home Videos where the father has just taken a big sip of some type of beverage right before the unfortunate impact happens. With mouth full, the contact between the ball and the man’s family jewels is made, and then the father spits out the liquid. This adds another dimension to the humor and amplifies the laughter.

There is something in the human DNA that causes people to laugh at the misfortune of others. It’s just really funny stuff. Because the viewer knows that the father isn’t going to get too hurt by getting hit in the crotch with a ball, it’s OK to laugh. But if that dad had been seriously injured, the entire video would not be quite as funny. When the dad stands up, the viewer knows that everything will be all right.

It happens to every parent: Saturday afternoon and the kids are bored. What they need is some funny stuff, something to keep them entertained. From toys to games to plain old quality time, weary parents need to be prepared for the boredom and know how to combat it. Here are a few useful ideas for funny stuff that any parent or child care provider can keep in mind when dealing with bored children.

Many parents rely on toys and other gadgets to keep their kids laughing. While this does have some impact, it should be remembered that children tire of repetition, which is probably why the same old toys just are not enough during a slow weekend afternoon. However, toys should not be the only option. Parents can also turn to funny stuff like games. Board games do not tend to see much use on a day to day basis, probably because of the set up involved. This means that taking the time to do it on a weekend can be just the thing to spice life up. Games are different than the norm, and usually get kids thinking and interacting, not to mention laughing. Better yet, games can be a great family activity, and it is easy to get everyone engaged in a rousing game.

While these activities are ready made options, parents should never neglect the fun stuff that comes from just using one’s imagination. When kids are bored, the best thing that they can be given is time and attention. If parents spend time playing with their children, it is easy to make the same old toys seem like new. Parents can set up some art supplies, read a book with their child, take a bike ride together. As long as parents bring enthusiasm to the activity, children are likely to respond similarly.

Clearly, as these tips show, with a little preparation and a lot of creativity, it is easy for parents to transform any restless day into a fun filled adventure for the whole family.
