Depending on whom you talk with or what you personally believe in, purchasing warranties can be a rip-off.

My husband and I, almost always, purchase warranties on products we buy because you never know what is going to happen.  Of course, it also has to make financial sense as well.

Let me give you couple of examples as to why we purchase warranties (or extended warranties).  About six or seven years ago we bought a DLP 60” TV for our family room at Sears store.  These products were a hot ticket item because not only it was “smaller-depth” in size (compared with original big monster TV’s), but it was reasonably priced for a large screen TV.

We would have loved to have gotten a plasma or LCD TV’s, but it was priced twice as much as the DLP TVs and was still “new” to the market.  Also, we usually don’t buy the first generation models (cars or electronics) because it almost always have some sort of problems; so we wait until all the initial glitches are taken care of before purchasing or upgrading.

My parents always bought their appliances at Sears because they had the best warranties.  So, since Sears had a huge sale on TV’s my husband and I decided to purchase our first large TV there.  Let me tell you … it was really hard for me to cough up extra $400 for an extended warranty … considering the TV was on sale for $1,500 AND our goal was to keep it under $2,000!

You might think $1,500 for a TV is too much, but considering the size, home technology, and the year it was purchases it really was a great deal.  Think about it … the first cellular phones cost more than $1,000!

By the time the transaction was completed our final cost was over $2,300!  I was in shocked and told my hubby to take off the extended warranty, but my hubby kept me cool … sort of!  LOL

Anyhoot … everything was fine for the first six months then our TV lamp bursted!  We were watching TV and heard a loud crash sound and our TV went dark!  It scared the living heck out of me … I kid you not … I thought I pooped in my pants!

We called the Sears warranty division and informed us that we still had the manufacturer’s warranty and they would send us a new lamp as soon as possible.  It took about three days until the lamp finally got to our house, and with Sear’s awesome warranty service a technician came to our house and even installed it for us (while teaching me where the lamp goes and etc).

After the technician was done he gave us a print out receipt of his work, and according to the tape it would have cost us little over $500 for his services … $399 for the lamp and rest for his “in-home” service!  Thank goodness for the manufacturer’s warranty; right?

Few more months passed by and same thing happened again; so, we repeated our steps.  I don’t know if we used our TV too much or we just purchased a lemon, but we went through about six(6) different lamps (all bursting from heat) until we received a official letter from Toshiba company regards to the lamps.  Apparently, their lamps were “defecting” and working on new (longer lasting) lamps; which will be delivered to our house in few weeks.

After the eight (8th) lamps I almost called it quits until the warranty division informed us that they would send us a backup one (so we won’t be out of TV for days), and can call them anytime.  So … with this math … we got our money’s worth and PLUS!  There would have been no way we can cough up $500 every time this happened … that would be been $4,000 in replacement parts and repair!

Moreover, when we purchased all of our kitchen appliances, at Lowe’s, we also purchased extended warranties on stove, dishwasher, refrigerator, microwave, and washer and dryer!  Lowe’s at the time had bundle warranties … three large appliances for $175 for three years!  So … we paid $350 for all six large appliances (compared to $400 at Sears … you can see why we went to Lowes).

Anyhow, our money was well spent because Lowe’s had to come and fix my dishwasher four (4) times (and replaced the mother board once), fix my washing machine two (2) times, and my stove one (1) time.

I guess I am a bull because I can’t have this much bad luck!  However, the Lowe’s technician informed me that it was not my fault and everything had “certain amount of life” … especially if I used them every day!

My husband told me while back that I use what I buy.  For instance, spending $300 on an iPhone (when it first came out) is worth it because I actually use my technology (not just for music and APPs) for everything!  So, its same thing with my appliances … I run my dishwasher every day, run my washer and dryer every other day, and etc … its same thing with my wardrobes and towels.  Can you guys believe that I still own and use bath towels I had in college … 18 years ago!  I actually still have my beach towel when I was a little kid!  This is why my husband never questions when I purchase something because I will use the heck out of them!  LOL

So … with all that ranting and raving … I think warranties are SO worth it!  However, paying $100 warranty on $200 product isn’t worth.  For example, we purchase $150 Black Tie warranty at Best Buy when we purchase a mini laptop ($350) couple of years ago.  Unfortunately, our littlest one dropped it and had a big crack on the screen.  Thinking the warranty will be valid I took it to the Best Buy store.  To my surprise … accidental drop isn’t covered, and the technician informed me that they can send to the manufacturer to get it fix, BUT it would cost around $250 (best scenario) to fix it!

Are you crazy?  I felt like a donkey because I coughed up $150 for a warranty … my fault I didn’t pay attention to that detail!  With lesson learned I didn’t get it fixed because by the time they were done it would have cost close to the new mini-top.  Same applies to the Kindle Fire and Nintendo 3DS because they wanted $97 for a electronic stuff warranty, but accidental drop wasn’t covered … so I passed on the warranty.

My final point is that math has to make sense before spending extra money on warranties.

My kids have there books all over the floor, because they ran out of space in their bookcases, and it is driving me nuts.

I would have installed couple of shelves in their bedrooms, but I really hate paying full price on shelving materials; especially shelf brackets!

The once that are sturdy can run you as low as $3.00 a piece and the mega strength ones can run up way over $10.00 a piece.

Thank goodness I went to Menards this m0rning because they have the 12″X8″ white shelf brackets on sale for $1.99 a piece AND (the second of is free) … B1 @$1.99G1 (free)!

I picked up 8 of these sturdy shelf brackets and paid ONLY $7.96!  That’s a great deal!  You never know when you might want to put up extra shelves in the house!

Makeup Vanity

I finally have a dedicated vanity area to put my makeup on in the mornings!  Yeah, for me!!!

  I have always utilized my bathroom to apply makeup and do my hair; however, our bathroom was starting get really cluttered with my makeup bins, hair accessories, lotions, hair dryer, flat and curling irons, and etc.  It looked more like a single girl bathroom rather than a master suite bathroom for a married couple to share (because there was no sharing going on here).

My poor husband never complained, and all of his stuff was shoved deep high into one drawer under the sink.  He is such a good man, and I just love him to pieces!

So, after over a decade of marriage, I finally decided I was old enough to have a dedicated area for my things; however, I just couldn’t believe how expensive these tables were.  I know $150 isn’t probably much to many of you, but I just couldn’t, with a good a conscious, stash out this much money for a makeup table. 

I searched online stores, local classified ads, auction sites, and brick-and-mortar stores, but I couldn’t find a decent looking set for my set budget.  I know you are going to laugh here, but my budget was $25 and I was even willing to go up extra $5 if I really loved it.

You might think I am being silly to have such low budget, but I purchased two captain chairs (to go with my existing formal dining room set) for $25 each.  The chairs were brand new (from an expensive furniture store) and the chairs are beautifully carved with ornate detailed works … it really is stunning, and I never thought I could ever afford chairs like these. 

Anyway, the chairs are 100% solid wood – no particle boards or veneers or anything like that … it is so solid that it’s very heavy to lift (in comparison to todays off the shelf furniture).  The original price on the chairs were $380 each, but since they had only three chairs left the manager discounted to get rid of it ASAP – that is whopping 93.42% price reduction or $355.00 in saving! 

So, now you can understand why my $25 budget was more than reasonable. 

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find anything I really loved.  I found a used vanity table for $35 but did not come with a bench, and found another used set (table and matching bench) for $50 but was painted poorly with a white paint, and finally found another one (which was an antique) for $20 but it had old furniture smell I couldn’t just ignore.  I just had to think about a makeup vanity alternative solution.

Just a little advice (things I personally experienced and steps I had taken) about buying old antique with strong “woodsy smell” furniture is that sometimes you can eliminate it just by airing it out or placing a box of baking soda or cleaning it with furniture cleaner, but sometimes only option you are left is to paint it or completely sanding off existing finish before re-staining.

 Sometimes putting extra TLC is worth it.  Honestly, you can’t get that kind of furniture quality (or materials) these days anymore unless you have the dough to pay for it; however, make sure you weight the benefits with cost.  Don’t just get flimsy cheap furniture that you don’t even love for $5 and put extra $50 (plus labor) … the math with not add up; you know what I mean?

Back to my vanity … I couldn’t find anything worth spending my money on it; so I decided to buy a computer desk and use it as a vanity — an makeup vanity alternative solution.  Since lots of makeup will fall on the surface and water stains will be inevitable I had to look for an easy cleaning surface desk; so I opt for a glass-top computer desk.

I saw a glass-top desk for sale on our local classified section for only $10.  It was in a great shape, no scratches or dents, but only thing it lacked was drawers for storage.  However, since drawer issue was really minor I decided to put my plastic storage tower, which I already had it in the house, under the desk and put all of my “junk” in there.

Furthermore, since I had extra chairs in my basement storage room and a oval black framed mirror, collecting dust, I brought it up and used it as my makeup vanity chair and mirror.  Guess what?  There are perfect match!!!

It’s just the perfect height and there is sufficient working surface area, and most importantly it is so easy to clean up; especially if you are using powder foundation.  I can’t be any happier!  This area is my own little space to put on my makeup in peace, and our master bathroom is really clean and clutter-free.

So, if you are looking for a makeup vanity alternative solution to a makeup vanity table then think about utilizing a glass-top desk.

Bought an electric heater, Honeywell Environmental HZ-725 Whole Room Heater, last year and it decided to die on us yesterday night.

We have been having some issues with Honeywell electric heater, but I didn’t think it would just clunk on us; especially when we are having massive snow storms and bitter cold days.  Not only we have the house thermostat on 71 degrees, but we are also using both of our electric heaters downstairs (well, one heater as of yesterday).

Usually we have the house thermostat on 68 degrees, to save some money on our gas bill, but it has been unbelievably cold.  It is so cold that it goes through your bones … I am just getting too old for this weather!!!! 

Our family room, our office and kids play-area are downstairs so we basically live down there; which is awesome because upstairs is always clean and ready for unannounced guests dropping by.  However, it does have its drawbacks in the winter months.

During summer it is awesome because it is always cool and comfortable, but during winter times it is always cold; especially for my dogs who are bred to be inside dogs.

Since I do love my dogs I turn on the Honeywell electric heater for them at night time, when body temperature drops, so they can stay warm when they sleep.  So, as my nightly ritual I set my coffee maker, turn off all the lights, and put the heater right front of their crate, but it didn’t even turn on.

As I mentioned earlier I had issues with this heater.   In the beginning the machine was so efficient that I had to monitor the heater, but as time went on it was illuminating less and less heat.  I just assumed that it was going to be replaced when the winter season was over; so I did not have to pay full price on them.

I was so ticked off, especially right before going to bed, but what the heck can you do; right?

One of the main reasons why we purchased this particular heating system was because it was really quite to run (our previous heater had a fan and it was so loud that it was very hard to hear our TV at night); however, it did have other benefits: i.e. heating and cooling down time was relatively quick (important because we have little kids), uses less energy, lightweight and environmentally safe (uses no oil).

These specifications are very appealing because it is affordable and can be pick-up at any store – no shipping charges, waiting time, and etc.
After my irritations with this heater ceased I decided to some research on this product including customer reviews.  I have noticed that either people really loved it or just hated it – there were no-in-betweens, and the average rating for Honeywell electric heater Environmental HZ-725 was 2 ½ out of 6 star rating on Amazon.

I will simply break down the pros and cons and you can decide for yourself.  Personally I would give this product 3 stars (out of 6) because it did provide great heating in the beginning and lasted little bit longer than what others claimed.

Pros:

1)  Quite
2) Efficient
3) Light
4) Safe
5) Effective
6) Does not overheat if not on full power
7) Some consumers are able to heat a large room while others claim it is great for a small personal area

Cons:

1) Some say the heater shuts down if it overheats
2) Some consumers complained that it only worked for 2 months, while others say it worked for 2-weeks
3) Only great for heating up small enclosed room (not a whole room system)
4) Emits smoldering burning plastic smell
5) The power light shines too bright when used in a dark room
6) If living in a older house there is a possibility of pushing electrical circuit system

To sum it up, there might be one more positive note in conjunction to cons, however, there are much more negative reviews on this product (and the negative reviews are about same problems).

We live in a semi small town, about ninety thousand, and have three home product stores.  I believe Home Depot was first.  Loews was second, and now Maynard’s.  We also have numerous hardware stores and four Wal-Mart’s.  They all sell things for your home.  Paint of various prices exists in these stores.  A couple has their own name brand paint sold at their stores.  Some are very cheap and low quality compared to the other ones.  I also heard on the news even in difficult economic times, they often do well.  I guess that makes sense.  Home stuff can actually save you money.  You can add insulation; buy energy saving products and so forth.  You can build anything and their fun to wander around in.  I am just surprised that we have so many in our city and they seem to be at least surviving.  I go to all of them.  I buy glue, sheetrock, and nails.  I try to fit bolts to screws.  I bought wheels and have never used them. I bought grass seed and grass food.  I bought patches of grass and starter food.  I bought all this and more of home stuff .  I bought shelves.  I bought those plastic ones that snap together in two minutes.  I love them because I have trouble-building things.  My wife thinks Loews is the most expensive but the nicest store.  She does not like Home Depot, too hard to find things.  I go alone sometimes and wander.  I try to compare prices in my head.  We even have a Harbor Freight store in our town.  They seem like a flea market but have cheap tools for a cheap price.  I have things you can use for models. I like looking at the tiny paint sprayers and home stuff like spray bottles and putty knifes.  I have three of them now and they are all different sizes.  I actually use them.  I bought an electric sander on black Friday for three dollars.  I tried using it once.  I might try again.  You do have black Fridays where you come from right?  You wake up at three in the morning, drink heavy doses of coffee, and go stand in line to catch unbelievable sales.  It is often cold.  I do not like big coats so I freeze to death for sometimes an hour to get my home stuff without having to carry a coat inside.

I like drills and all those big expensive tools like circular saws and minters and big benches with big clamps.  I cannot use them though, but it would be great to be able to.  I have friends who use tools all the time and I like watching them.  One of my friends will spend sometimes two hours at Home Depot looking down every aisle.  He comments on all the tools he has but likes looking.  In bad economic times, people probably hold off buying a new house and use home stuff to fix up the old one.  It is also a feeling of accomplishment when you complete a project and looks all right.  It held up.  You did a good job.  How can you beat that?  You can build something or hang something up without it falling to the ground.  Good luck.

There are a lot of things round the house.  I mean, not in the house, but literally around the house.  I have hoses that are in front yard and in the background.  We have a big back yard so I need to connect at least three hoses together to reach al of my yard.  We know how that goes sometimes.  We do not buy hoses on a regular basis so they may not be in the best condition.  I see holes in them.  I see the water coming through.  I have a hole in my hose home stuff.  It is silly I know, but sometimes a hose may have a bunch of holes in them and looks more like a sprinkler.  I do not want to go buy a new one so I will let it go.  Sometimes the connectors are all messed up to and water leaks from them.  I twist them and get a wrench to tighten them but they still leak.  They are bent.  How did they get bent?  Were they thrown down on a brick or something?  Maybe I walked on one and screwed it up.  I guess I can replace my home stuff with another connector but that sounds like work to me.  I am not good at that kind of thing anyway.  I have never really done it before.  Always bought another hose that is all.  I guess I could learn.

Another thing around my house is bushes and mulch.  The mulch likes to blow away and I never see where it quite goes.  I do not see it anywhere in the yard so where does all the mulch go.  I keep buying more of it and it disappears.  I bought bricks to hold it in but it s still gone. 

My home stuff is disappearing right before my eyes.  Now, my bushes have not done so yet.  I mean disappear.  They turn brown sometimes.  They are supposed to be ever green but they seem to be part brown all the time.  I do not know why.  I do walk on them sometimes, they are rather short.  My wife says they are not the kind that gets tall.  I did not put them in our front yard by the front of the house.  The people who built the house did.  Our neighbors tore theirs out.  I am thinking about that too.  Home stuff sometimes must be put to pasture.  The bushes, the mulch, and the hoses are not everything around my house.  I have trees.  I had to cut three down already.  It is expensive to cut down a tree but they were dead and dangerous.  My logger brother in law came and cut them for us.  That was scary.  He missed the neighbors fence by a foot when the tree came crashing down.  I just think he loves cutting down trees and sees where they land.  I am glad he missed.  He did save me eight hundreds dollars cutting home stuff down.  I miss them.  I like trees.  There is more room in the backyard and my son and I can play baseball and football more easily now.  He is getting better.  The hoses are not getting better though.  They still leak and look rotten in places.  Good luck my friends.
