I am having a serious issue ever since I read an article regarding “best dads in …”

In general I don’t really like the notion where publications and media claiming to finding and voting on “best dads …” or “best moms …” in anything.

It is not only insulting to other moms and dads out there, but it is so biased!

Yes … there are great moms/dads, and there are bad moms/dad (i.e. parents abusing their children), but “best” among the others?  I don’t think so …

I think, we as parents, try our hardest to provide for our children, to spend quality time with them, to love and cherish them, but we CAN’T do it all!

I will try not to tarnish the winner’s claim to position, but the basic factors of being the “best dad are …” (paraphrased to protect an individual)

1)  He attends kids activities …

2) Will not complain …

3) Spends time with the children …

4) Will best to balance between work and family …

5) He is dedicated to his family …

6) He is patient …

Well … like most dads I know they do all of those things, and more.  So … if your husband had to work more hours to provide for his family does that mean that he is a bad fathers?  Or if he complains does that mean he is also a bad fathers?

Let’s approach it this way … if a father is deployed to overseas and not able to see his kids for a year (and can’t attend his children’s soccer practice or daughter’s dance recital) does that mean he is a bad father too?  or just a good soldier?

What about people who didn’t send in recommendations to a publisher for this title … does that mean he is less of a father because his family and friends didn’t send in a letter?

As you can tell … this is running deep in my core because I know plenty of moms and dads who are doing their hardest to be good parents to their children.

I know, like many of you women out there, I have a great husband, an AWESOME father to my children (I am blessed and if my sons become 1/2 of what their father does for them then I know my future grandchildren will be blessed too), and perfect partner.

Just like an old saying … A man does not have convince himself (or everyone else) by saying “I’m a man” to be a MAN; and this applies to being a good father.

To fathers and mother out there … you don’t need a validation from publications …

Do your best … even though times maybe tough …

Do love and cherish your family …

Do laugh off the little stuff …

Do hug your children and be there for them when they need a should to cry on …

Do enjoy the little stuff …

but mostly …

Do NOT make “them” belittle your efforts …

I was never big on buying things online until I tried EBay.  It was fun to look around all the products they had.  I was amazed that one could almost get anything they wanted or desired here.  I even heard on the news one day a family wanted to auction themselves!  People buy cars, boats, and even houses at this auction site.  I guess though, there are few people in the world who have access to a computer and the internet that have not heard of EBay.  My niece bought ballet shoes on it for a great savings.  Online stuff is great I found out when I first started buying things off it.  My biggest hobby is building and running HO trains.  Ho trains are very expensive and the scenery is also very pricey.  A package of thirty Ho trees can be over thirty dollars.  If you need hundreds of trees for your specific layout, well, you can imagine the cost involved.  One switch or turnout can cost almost twenty dollars.  A turnout is a piece of railroad track that switches a train from one track to the other.  It is run and hooked up to a transformer.  Online stuff like this can cost half the price of what you may pay for in a store or hobby shop.  Figures of people are very expensive in hobby stores too.  A finely detailed little person that is less than an inch tall can be costly.  Some are hand painted so a lot of detailed work is involved.  I found a set of a hundred of them from some place in China I cannot pronounce for pennies on the dollar.  I saw a set of five people in a hobby store for ten dollars.  I paid less for my online stuff little people and got a hundred of them.

I also bought some posters to frame and hang in my basement of some of my favorite musicians.  A Kate Bush poster was eight dollars.  I paid three hundred dollars to frame it.  Wow, I wish I could have had it framed from EBay.  I guess I could have in a way, at least bought the frame online anyway.  I also bought a few Tom Waits posters, and a hand painted picture of him too for my basement wall.  The condition on all of them was very good and the online stuff became my friend.  I purchased more things online and checked out other places to shop.  I have compared prices on items, looked at different carpets online and looked for cheep drum sets online.  Expensive toys for my children at stores became much cheaper online.  I have checked out Craig’s list too and almost bought something from a buyer only minutes from my house.  I think though, that the fun of it is very appealing too.  There are many online stores on EBay and I will jump right to the toy train stores to see what train set online stuff they have now.

Another great thing about EBay is how good the relationship between buyer and seller is.  Everything I have bought there was packaged very well and all the products were in good shape.  I cannot say I have bought a ton of stuff but it has all been worth it.
