This is a very tough Holiday year for many families.

I volunteer in my kids schools during Holiday season to organize and collect donations for in-need families.

My kid’s school district has many donation/collection drives throughout the year, but the Holiday drive is very special for me.

Fortunately, we collect enough monetary funds to pay for two different family’s utility bills, grocery shopping, and gift cards for each family as well.

Also, we have so many families purchasing clothes, toys, school supplies, and etc for individual kids (ranges between 6 to 8 kids) these kids actually enjoy their Holiday season with their families.

Unfortuantely, the economy is not picking up as fast as we all want, and the rate of unemployment is still on the rise.  I heard it over the radio that a father (single dad who has a sole custody of his two girls) lost his job a week before Thanksgiving Day!

How terrible is that?  Having something on the table on Thanksgiving Day is hard enough already, but Holiday is just around the corner!

Unlike other past generation (including mine) our children’s generation EXPECT things (and not just anything, but expensive things) without fully understanding how much things cost!

My eldest wants a phone because many of the kids in class has one.  Well … unfortunately, my money tree died last year (apparently I have to water them) and my priorities differ from my kids.

I guess I can charge it on my card, but why should I?  I am a great mom, but I am not going to get myself into debts because my kids want them!

It will be different if it’s just ONE thing, but their lists NEVER stops!!!  Honestly … if my kids take care of things I might be less passionate of saying “NO,” but they don’t!  At the end of the day they are being KIDS and I understand where they are coming from.

I can’t blame them for wanting things because it’s nice to have “things,” and I would LOVE to buy them everything and anything they want; however, in this tough economic times it’s just not feasible.

I don’t want you guys to get a wrong idea of my kids.  They are the most awesome kids in the world, and I am honored to be their mom, but they are kids.

Here are some great tips and discount ideas when shopping … well, this is what I have been doing for couple of years now, and it has worked out beautifully.

My husband and I are firm believers in helping less fortunate people because we still have a roof over our heads, have dinner on our dinner table, we have heat to stay warm, we have a car to drive, and etc.

Unfortunately, there are many in-need families … it just breaks my heart.  If saying “NO” to my child about a phone is hard I can’t even imagine saying “NO” to Christmas gifts … it just breaks my heart!

Back to my Holiday gifts …

We no longer buy our kids gifts after gifts … not only their taste changes rapidly, but I don’t have the space to store them!  How many boxes of LEGO can you have; right?

Instead of concentrating on quantities we have concentrated quality of gifts.  My kiddos really like the fact that they receive two great items (that they really really want) vs many small items.

Also, our family members chip-in on gifts to get them one great one from them vs 10 small gifts.  This is especially effective when you have older child with more “expensive electronic” needs and requests.

Moreover, we have a budget.  Each child gets a fixed budget for Christmas gifts … nothing more … nothing less.  It’s fair for everyone.

Find an alternative or substitute brands of children’s toys and accessories.  This is tricky if you have older kids, but if you have a toddler then it works.  For example, instead of buying Thomas Train table and Trains we bought Imaginarium Train table set (with trains and fixtures included).  Don’t get suckered into buying these awefully over-priced items.

Finally, make sure that your kids are involved in gift giving.  We usually subtract the amount, from their X-mas gift budget, they wish to donate to a charity or buy a gift (or two) a family-in-need.  Not only it makes them feel better, but they also appreciate what they have and how lucky they are that we can still afford to get them gifts.

This is an important lesson for all kids, and family of all ages.

I do not like going to stores and shopping.  I always feel I could be doing something more important or better for me.  Now I might not do it anyway, but that is how many people think.  Instead of being at the grocery store I could be mowing the lawn.  If it is winter, I could be shoveling snow.  So with that logic, I should leave the grocery store, run to the parking lot, and get in my car and rush home to mow the lawn. 

So my wife lets me go, and I go home.  Shopping stuff is behind me now.  I go in the garage, push the lawnmower out in the grass, and look in the gas tank.  No gas.  I got to go and get gas.  That will take some time.  I grab the gas can and go to the nearest gas station.  That took time.  I go back home.  The neighbor across the street comes over.  We talk.  He leaves.  I wonder what aisle my wife is down right now, and I have not even started to mow.  I crank up the mower and try to get started.  A salesman this time halts my progress.  I do not want to be rude, but I am sort of busy.  I want to make progress.  Impress my wife, I did not leave the grocery store for nothing.  I should walk faster and push faster.  I have to think about the best route to take today.  Other days I can take a different mowing route, no hurry.  Today, I am hurrying.  I need to show progress.  I wonder if she is at the check out register by now.  There could be long lines.  There is always long lines when I go and in a hurry. 

Shopping stuff might be over in a little bit for my wife.  I have gotten little done.  I am trying to move faster but everything is against me now.  If I run, my neighbors will not trust me anymore to watch their kids.  Nobody runs mowing the lawn.  I have to calm down now.  It is Ok. 

Everything will be fine.  I am doing it now.  I am mowing down grass.  I’m picking up things in my way.  I am wiping my brow and oh no!  My wife is pulling up in the driveway.  She is done with her shopping stuff.  I will have to explain why I have not even mowed the front lawn after all this time.  I turn off the mower to help her with the grocies.  I mean, I left the grocery store to do this and I have not gotten anything done.  I am still over an hour away from being done.  I could have stayed at the store and picked out a jar of jelly.  I prefer grape.  She probably bought grape.  I needed beer.  She probably bought beer.  I look in the bag I am bringing in the house and the shopping stuff has brought me beer.  I feel bad now for leaving the grocery store but I thought I had only the best intentions.  Save time and thinking like that.  I really was tired of the grocery store though.  The groceries are all in the house and I crank up the lawn mower.
