Stupid Stuff! How Did I Get All of This in My Head? by Virginia Chaney (Paperback - Lulu.Com) $13.95 to $13.95 |
In today’s economy, a high percentage of the population is unemployed and is going through the sometimes unpleasant process of the job search. For those who are lucky enough to manage to land a job interview, with such a high level of competition around them, it is important to remember that even if you accidentally let loose with some stupid stuff during your interview, it’s not the end of the world. There are a few techniques recommended by human resources professionals to get around stumbling in the question and answer session, and to get back on your feet.
One of the most important things not to do is to lie. If you find yourself telling a lie as an answer, this is an example of stupid stuff that may be hard to recover from. You should however, as quickly as possible, try to turn around your statement, saying that you have misrepresented that last statement and would like to amend it. Lies do come out in the end. Again, because there is such a high level of competition out there for a limited number of jobs at the moment, those companies that are hiring are highly likely to check every reference.
Nerves can also be another major reason why a normally confident and capable interviewee could suddenly find themselves saying stupid stuff. This is a common reaction to being placed under the scrutiny of others, but should be no cause for panic. Try to speak more slowly, and emphasize the words you are saying. Taking the time to listen to them as they come out of your mouth may help give you the extra time to anticipate what types of questions that the interviewer may follow up with, so you are not left mute.
Not having anything at all to say can be even worse than saying stupid stuff, so try to relax and think ahead of time about what your strengths are and why you are interested in this position. A little bit of preparation will go a long way, and will make you come across as more confident. Try to think of some good questions to throw back at the interviewer. Most will ask at the end of the interview if you have any questions for them, and this is not a good time to be silent, because it will make you look disinterested.

More people would most likely find success if they could stop themselves from thinking about the stupid stuff that they may have done wrong in their lifetime. Beginning to filter your thoughts and forget about the negativity of the past is the best way to start moving forward with your life in the right direction. This is of course easier said than done, and may take therapy and years of commitment. However, it seems that the most important way to get rid of these negative thoughts is simply to start making a conscious decision to do so.
Some of the most typical ways that we tend to let stupid stuff get to us is with those nagging thoughts about the day. Perhaps you said something stupid in a meeting, and think that everyone was laughing at you. Maybe you put your shirt on backwards, or dropped a bowl of soup on your clean shirt. These are all stupid little things that happen to everyone, but the most successful among us manage to laugh them off and forget about them eventually. There are a few exercises that can be repeated to help stop dwelling on these small mishaps, and move forward with confidence.
For example, no matter what kind of stupid stuff you have found yourself guilty of today, make sure to forgive yourself. Say it aloud in the mirror, and then give yourself a compliment. You could write the compliment down, starting a journal of positive things that you have done. For all of the stupid actions that a person takes, there are bound to be smart moves scattered throughout the day as well. It’s best not to forget about those. This journal, when added to every day, can then serve as a powerful testament to all of the good, positive things that you are capable of as a person. Everyone has their good points, and it’s important to remember them throughout the day.
In the end, taking this time to consciously acknowledge all of the good things you do on a daily basis will help to cancel out all of the stupid stuff. The fact is, that no one is perfect all of the time, and everyone makes mistakes. The best way to keep moving forward from these mistakes is to learn from them, and then give yourself a break. This will lead to a new cycle of positive thoughts, making life much more enjoyable overall.

The internet has revolutionized the way the world functions. People utilize the internet for everything from full time employment to casual recreation. However, with all the important and useful information out there, there is also a lot of stupid stuff. Between the latest scams, hidden viruses, and obscene content, there is also plenty of pointless or inaccurate websites to contend with.
So, how is it possible to surf the net and steer clear of all the stupid stuff that can sometimes slow people down? Fortunately, there are a few simple things anyone can do to stay away from the stupid and focus on the good.
First, consider how the link was found. While search engines are indeed a wonderful thing, they can sometimes bring up some rather obscure things. For the best results when searching for something specific, it is ideal to start by looking at sites that have a solid reputation. Reputable sites often provide reputable links, making it easier to find trustworthy information and references.
Second, look at the site extension. This is one of the easiest ways to get a sense of a website without doing any reading whatsoever. Site extensions reflect the type of site and how it was funded. The most common extensions include .com, .net, .org, .edu, and .gov. While anyone can get a .com or a .net, .org and .edu are harder to come by, offered only to established organizations and schools. The most restricted URLs end with .gov, and those are sites that are funded by the government. While .org and .edu tend to be easier to trust than the general pool of .com sites, those extensions are not guarantees of accuracy.
Last, use some common sense. This point cannot be stressed enough. Many search engines will now notify users of sites with a history of problems, which can be a large help. However, while that can prevent contracting computer viruses, it takes giving a site a once over to tell whether or not its content has any merit. Look for things like references, external links, the overall quality, the contact person, or anything else that gives the site credibility. Then, always be sure to check the information with at least one other site to make sure it is accurate.
Overall, these three tips may not be fool proof, but they are a good start for steering clear of stupid stuff online.Â
