For parents whose vocal cords can’t hold out for 200 rounds of “Hush Little Baby,” a sound machine is a must for baby bedtime routines. And the DEX Sound Sleeper is one of the best ones we’ve ever found. This small (6 by 10 by 12 inches), simple device features a high quality speaker, on/off or 60-minute timer switch, volume control, single, combine, or random mode, battery or power adapter capability, headphone jack (headphones not included), and, most spectacularly, 10 sound options which can be combined to make 24 sound combinations altogether.

Doctors and sleep experts recommend a consistent, relaxing sleep routine for newborns and older babies. Freeing baby’s sleep environment of jarring or distracting outside noises is an important step in creating a soothing space for sleep. The Sound Sleeper provides just enough peaceful background noise to block household hubbub. Once baby becomes familiar with the sounds of this machine, she’ll probably start yawning the minute she hears it! </p. The Sounds of (Near) Silence
The sounds of Sound Sleeper don’t have to be boring, just relaxing and repetitive. Experiment with the various sounds to find the perfect soporific.

Summer Night
The buzz of peeper frogs and insects is a happy, sleepy, country sound.

Rain
What’s cozier than curling up in bed with a gentle rainstorm pattering outside the window?

Brook
Burble, burble, burble—just don’t try this one when your toddler is potty-training!

Ocean
The deep tranquility of a calm ocean is unmatched for its lulling ability.

Wind
The wind blows quietly in the trees, but you and baby are safe and sound at home.

Womb
The rhythmic swishing sounds of the womb: it’s a natural for soothing baby!

Seagull
Just a few lonely seagull cries, widely spaced.

Bird
Pretty, delicate bird song.

Buoy
The distant ringing of a bell buoy. Great in combination with the Ocean sound.

Thunder
Thunder rumbles, but the storm always stays far off in the distance. Best combined with Rain, of course.

Experiment with the Combine mode to find the perfect sleep-inducing sounds for your baby. We like Brook and Bird, Wind and Thunder, and Ocean and Buoy, but who knows? Maybe the magic combination will be Womb and Seagull!

The power adapter feature of the Sound Sleeper is very handy for everyday use, but the battery option is a lifesaver when traveling. The ability to leave the sound machine on all night long (or put it on the one-hour timer) is invaluable. Babies are notorious for waking up throughout the night; when they hear the same soothing sounds they fell asleep to, it will be much easier to return to those sweet dreams. Requires 4 AA batteries (not included). –Emilie Coulter

I’ve been buying from Amazon about ten years now. I’ve spend a LOAD of $ here. And I’ve been almost universally pleased with products and service. I’ll admit trying to decipher what some guy in Bombay is saying (who speaks ‘English’, but not ‘American’) when I already having wornout hearing is no party, but on the debit/credit assessment I can live with it … even though he and thousands of his friends are taking jobs needed VERY BADLY right here at home. (I stopped shopping at Wal-Mart years ago over that one … hmmm, maybe I need to reconsider.)

What used to be called ‘mail order’ buying is critical to me because I’m disabled. Very disabled. CFS/Fibromyalgia/Scoliotic Arthritis and more. Forgive me. I never do this. We’ve all got troubles. It’s just to help you understand why it took me so long to get around to finding out how to return this junk to Amazon. When showering is a challenge, the labor of sending back something they told you would work in the first place is less than inviting. But today I felt good enough to bite the bullet only to find it was me that got bitten.

The cut-off for returning this paperweight was last month (purchased in November). Period. Tough guacamole. Any credit for years of business?

Ho Ho Ho. And questions like, Did it ever do anything but sit there? Not interested. Oooooooook.

Amazon’s Plan B was talking to Rajiv in Bombay. I think that’s called salt in a wound.

Back in November, to make real sure, I had a friend listen to it. Someone 30 years younger with ears that have plenty of tread left on them.

She said, ‘Hmmm. I think I hear something far, far away.’ The volume was maxed-out.

OK. I know. I’m not being sporting at all about this. So, I’m disabled and doing anything (if I remember it, first) is exhausting and painful. Life’s tough and that’s how the cookie crumbles. I guess it’s the ‘No Exceptions’ thing that rubs me raw. And all that business I sent their way. AND a product that wasn’t just lame. It was INERT. And something like twenty bucks. ouch.

That’s enough opera, I suppose. It’s only the lemon YOU get that really makes you pucker.

I just wouldn’t buy one if I worked for my money. And you might look at that Return Policy some time. YOU pay the frieght; purchase price is discounted … by them. Now I’ll put the violin away.

This is a low cost item……Perhaps made in a third world nation….Very low volume, had to place it almnost next to my ear to hear it. Power cord would not stay pluged in, big problem. DONT’T RECOMEND you buy this second rate thing!

The sounds are nice and I like the fact that you can combine sounds, like thunder and rain. Problem is that it’s just way too quiet. If you’re trying to block out other sounds then you want it, but if you just need a little something to soothe you then it’s very nice. It’s fun for playing pretend with the kids too.

Sucks…You can hardly hear anything! The sounds are distorted and it’s just too quiet and well, cheap! Don’t waste your money…the HomMedics one is great…simple and loud!

I was really excited when I found this. But I was very disappointed when I actually plugged it in. The sound effects sound like you are in a tunnel. Cheap and unrealistic!
