For not only the health of the parents, but also the overall well-being of the child, keeping your baby on a regular sleep schedule is one of the most important yet overwhelmingly difficult aspects of new baby stuff to deal with. There are no surefire methods that will work for every single baby, but there are a few techniques that have been shown to help get them ready for bed around the same time at least during the day or night.
Sleeping patterns may be especially erratic during the first few weeks that the baby is brought home from the hospital, as they adjust to their new surroundings.
Setting patterns of consistency when the baby is young is one of the hardest but most important parts of behavioral baby stuff. This will help ensure that the baby is used to going to bed at the same time every evening, and these patterns should then carry over into their toddler and early childhood years. That can be extremely helpful down the road, because toddlers can be notoriously difficult to get to go to bed at a reasonable time.
The earlier the bedtime is, the better. This is true in most cases for infant development, because the baby stuff that is happening during sleep relates to them being able to grow up to be strong and healthy down the road. A sample bedtime as the baby starts to be old enough to protest would be 6:30 or 7:00 pm in most cases. If the baby is willing to go to bed earlier or starts to get that heavy-lidded look earlier in the evening, then by all means set an earlier bedtime. Recommended sleep amounts in the evening could range from anywhere between 11-18 hours of sleep, depending on the baby’s age and stage of development.
Experts agree that certain aspects of baby stuff such as making sure that he or she gets enough sleep each night can have a huge impact on life down the road, as the baby matures. Some parents make the mistake of saying that they will bother trying to regulate sleep patterns later, but usually by that point the pattern has already been set and it may be impossible to coax the child into bed at a reasonable hour by that point. Keeping in mind that this is for the baby’s personal health, it seems worthwhile to lay down the law at an early age.
