In today’s economy, a high percentage of the population is unemployed and is going through the sometimes unpleasant process of the job search. For those who are lucky enough to manage to land a job interview, with such a high level of competition around them, it is important to remember that even if you accidentally let loose with some stupid stuff during your interview, it’s not the end of the world. There are a few techniques recommended by human resources professionals to get around stumbling in the question and answer session, and to get back on your feet.
One of the most important things not to do is to lie. If you find yourself telling a lie as an answer, this is an example of stupid stuff that may be hard to recover from. You should however, as quickly as possible, try to turn around your statement, saying that you have misrepresented that last statement and would like to amend it. Lies do come out in the end. Again, because there is such a high level of competition out there for a limited number of jobs at the moment, those companies that are hiring are highly likely to check every reference.
Nerves can also be another major reason why a normally confident and capable interviewee could suddenly find themselves saying stupid stuff. This is a common reaction to being placed under the scrutiny of others, but should be no cause for panic. Try to speak more slowly, and emphasize the words you are saying. Taking the time to listen to them as they come out of your mouth may help give you the extra time to anticipate what types of questions that the interviewer may follow up with, so you are not left mute.
Not having anything at all to say can be even worse than saying stupid stuff, so try to relax and think ahead of time about what your strengths are and why you are interested in this position. A little bit of preparation will go a long way, and will make you come across as more confident. Try to think of some good questions to throw back at the interviewer. Most will ask at the end of the interview if you have any questions for them, and this is not a good time to be silent, because it will make you look disinterested.
