How to Organize Excess Clutter

Whether you live alone or have watched your family grow over the years, it’s inevitable that over time there seems to be an excess of home stuff that surrounds you at every turn. From old papers and files to magazines that you never ended up reading, clutter is everywhere. The situation is compounded if you have a family, with children going through toys and clothes like they are going out of business. If you don’t regularly donate these outdated items to charity, they could end up taking up valuable room inside the home, taking up valuable space.

Many people justify holding on to all of this extra home stuff because they say these items hold some sort of sentimental value. If this is the case, that is understandable; we all cherish our keepsakes. It can be helpful to cut down on the clutter however by turning a more critical eye on which items should be more valued than others. Laying out all of these items in a row can help you pick and choose those that are the most cherished, and that could be put into a time capsule and stored away in the attic or other storage space.

If the majority of your clutter is of the paper variety, you may want to think about putting in a new filing system. This is the most common type of home stuff lying around that gets in the way, and really should not take up a great deal of space. By organizing your files alphabetically or putting in different categories for home paperwork and business paperwork, you can safely put away all of this clutter in a new, organized spot.

This can make locating records easier when tax time rolls around or you have some other need for your files.

Other home stuff that gets in the way can include outdated appliances or gifts that you received but have never used. Giving these away to charity, as well as old clothes that you no longer wear, is a good idea because it helps those in need and helps clear your home. There is nothing like a clean, spacious home that is free of clutter to help you unwind at the end of a long day. Excess materials blocking your path or not being able to find anything can lead to mental distress, in the long run, so taking the time to clean house a bit can be more important than many people think.
