Keeping Yourself Busy when Unemployed

With the economy the way it is at the moment, more and more people have found themselves out of work, with an unprecedented amount of time on their hands. If you have recently been laid off, don’t despair. There is plenty more stuff to do than just sitting around the house fruitlessly emailing resumes off to job listings. Think of this as a useful time to take advantage of. You could invest this time into taking up new hobbies that you’ve always wanted to try, or to learn a new skill that will only help your chances of potential future employment.

Building skills is a good way to stay occupied because it lets you feel like you are bettering yourself, which is good for the confidence and self-esteem. It is also helpful during job interviews, because when they ask what you have been up to in between jobs, you can tell them all about the new stuff that you have learned. Some employment-friendly skills include new languages, or computer skills that could get you ahead. Picking up a completely new skill such as graphic design could even launch your career in a completely new direction. There are online tutorials on many different websites that could help point you in the right direction.

This could also be seen as a downtime to relax and get away from it all. If you have had a mental list of stuff you’ve wanted to try, now is the time. This could be as simple as going to a new restaurant or learning how to knit or sew. It could also involve foreign travel. Many people find that with their unemployment benefits, they are able to live for quite a while abroad in countries where prices are lower than at home. If you have nothing to tie you down, there is no better time than now.

Of course, it’s also important to make the time to actively look for new work. Even with unemployment benefits, there will come a time when you will need to start bringing in income once again. It’s great to take advantage of this free time for all of the stuff you have wanted to do but have put off, but it’s also important to stay focused and on track. This means actively sending out resumes, placing follow-up phone calls to potential employers, and keeping active track of who you have been corresponding with. Eventually, unemployment ends and then it is back to the daily grind.
