When thinking of what makes a traditional family these days, it’s hard not to include a pet along with all of that other family stuff. If you’re a parent, you’ve probably already heard all of the pleas and arguments as to why your children deserve to have that puppy. There are very real reasons why you should bring a new family member into the household, but be sure to analyze the situation from all angles first. For example having a family dog is a great idea in that it teaches responsibility, can serve as security, and is a loyal family friend that will help entertain and protect your children.
On the other hand, make sure that if you do choose to get a dog to add to your family stuff, that it will be cared for. If you live in a small apartment in the city, for instance, this may not be the best idea. Dogs need time to exercise. You don’t need to necessarily have the big backyard in the suburbs to have a dog, but it does help. If you don’t have this, be sure that the children will be willing to take the dog out each and every day for play and walks, and that they are prepared to clean up after it.
Another common pet that families may choose is a cat. Along with taking care of buying cat food and other responsibilities that are part of family stuff, be sure that no one is allergic to cat hair in the family. The same principle goes for any sort of furry pet. Some animals are better suited to getting along with small children than others, so ask at the humane society or pet store about this before getting a lizard or something that will end up attacking the children.
Overall, there are many benefits to any family stuff that can be done together, and taking care of a pet is one of these activities that many people enjoy. A pet can become a new part of the family, making it stronger and providing low-cost entertainment to children as an added benefit. With rising rates of obesity, it can be a good excuse to also get the children outdoors and active by playing with their dog or taking it for walks, which is also a good thing. This is why so many families choose to bring pets on board.
