The Top Time Wasters at Work

Although the internet has been proven to be quite a useful tool in many ways for the overall productivity levels of an office, it also has its pitfalls. Any professional working in the IT department is probably already privy to this knowledge of just how much time get wasted at work, by people looking at stupid stuff on the internet. Some companies choose to block these sites that are typical time wasters, hoping to focus productivity levels on the tasks at hand. Others just stay oblivious to it, and hope that the distractions help workers focus more when they are actually working.

This second principle can actually be somewhat applicable to certain jobs. For instance, any job that requires long hours staring at a computer screen can be draining on the eyes and can cause mental fatigue. Taking a few small breaks throughout the day to watch videos of funny animals or other stupid stuff on YouTube can seem like a waste of time, but it actually gives the brain some time to relax, so that when the worker returns to the task at hand, he or she feels somewhat rejuvenated.

It’s probably a better idea to take a walk and get some fresh air rather than stay at the desk watching stupid stuff on video sharing websites or reading celebrity gossip, but unfortunately not everyone follows this trend. Online shopping is another one of the big time-killers for those at work with some downtime, be it on large sites such as Amazon or EBay, or the smaller ones that the internet is filled with. When completed quickly and efficiently, online shopping can be a good way to get errands out of the way. Sometimes though these sites can be hypnotic and you can waste hours browsing through all of the different options.

Reading the news in the morning at work can be a good way to keep informed, especially if you work in the finance sector or other areas where it’s important to stay on top of the day’s trends. However, some of these news sites can have stupid stuff on them that is irrelevant and can end up being a big waste of time. Try to keep news-reading to the essential stories that will help you stay informed in a positive way, rather than these other secondary lifestyle pieces, at least while on the clock. Otherwise, the whole day can easily pass by before you know it.
