Tips for Sticking to a New Diet

At some point in their lives, many people will find that they may have gained a few unsightly pounds. This often happens over the holiday season, and leads to the onslaught of New Year’s resolutions vowing to lose the weight. This is just stuff that happens to everyone, but it can be battled with a proper change in diet. Sometimes only having a few pounds to lose can be more difficult in a way that trying to lose a larger amount of weight, because it’s easy to keep putting it off.

Putting off the diet though and eating just stuff that is still unhealthy is not a good idea, however, because that small amount of excess weight will keep growing until suddenly you do actually have a large task ahead of you. The first tip, then, to dieting, is to start immediately when you start packing on the pounds, before life gets more difficult. One way to kick off a new diet is to cleanse the body with a water or juice fast for a day or two. This can help your mental state and give you a sense of lightness and clarity for the road ahead.

It’s hard to take a diet seriously unless you have some sort of exercise plan to go with it. The most effective weight loss programs are those that focus on more than just stuff that you eat. You should also think about your overall lifestyle and how you can work in more physical activity. This doesn’t mean that you have to go to the gym, if that sounds intimidating. Simply taking the time to walk more often, or to go dancing a couple of times a week, will help you start to shed pounds. The trick is to pick an activity that you enjoy.

Another important tip for diet success is to not eat just stuff that is considered health food. You can give yourself a few treats, and in fact those dieters that allow themselves a small piece of chocolate or a glass of wine every now and then are far more likely to stick with their overall plan than those that totally deprive themselves. Once you start noticing results, this should be incentive to continue on with the healthy diet, rather than to give up and revert back to the old ways. It’s all too easy to start a pattern of yo-yo dieting if you’re not careful.
